La strada di San Giovanni by Italo Calvino, the two novels Fotografia e sogno (Photography and Dream) in 1972 and Le città invisibili in 1982, “possess a certain uniformity in their narrative principle.”13 They both address the problem of reconciling with the world, with life as it is, and of returning to the experience and values of childhood. Calvino’s earlier novel describes the phases of his artistic discovery and his journey through the world of visual art. The second, written many years later, was dedicated to the memory of his mother, who died of cancer in 1981. As he explains in the dedication, “This book is a cry, a cry of love, for my mother, who was the most extraordinary model for a good life.”14
La strada di San Giovanni is Calvino’s first novel and his first literary success. It was first published in 1962 in Italy and then later in English in 1968, translated by Ann Goldstein and published by Putnam. At the time, his first novel had a “special, original merit,”15 but now, almost a half century later, it continues to resonate and to be read, particularly in Italy.
